TRAVERSE CITY -- Grand Traverse County investigators are searching for a person who torched a shed and attempted to set fire to three vehicles in neighborhoods west of Silver Lake Road near West Middle School.
A small wood utility shed on Deerfield Lane in Garfield Township went up in flames about 2:30 a.m. Sept. 25. The next morning, other residents reported finding charred remains of paper or cloth stuffed into the filler necks of their vehicle gas tanks, said Lt. Bryan Marrow of the county sheriff's department.
The wicks apparently burned out before they ignited the gas tanks, Marrow said. The vehicles were not seriously damaged.
The sheriff's department suspects all four incidents are related and asks anyone with information to contact the sheriff's department at 955-5000 or the Silent Observer tip line at 941-8477.
The Michigan Arson Committee offers a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction in arson cases.
