Cherry Festival board members chosen

TRAVERSE CITY -- The National Cherry Festival has set its Board of Governors for 2009-10.

Board members announced Tuesday include Kay Relyea, president; Robert Reed, finance officer; Mike Borden, Tino Breithaupt, Chuck Downey, Michael Estes, Ron Hofemister, Kevin Jageger, Judy LaCross, Gerald Morris and Jan Warren, board members.

Newly elected board members include Enrico Schafer, founding attorney of Traverse Legal, and James Connaughton, assistant vice president, Huntington National Bank, both to serve three-year terms; and Patrick Leadens, director of human resources, Grand Traverse Resort & Spa, who is to serve a one-year term.

Their responsibilities include festival governance, policy-setting and oversight.

Cherry Festival officials also were to present checks that totaled over $14,500 to 48 nonprofit groups, all of which volunteered for this year's festival.

Angela Saylor, the 2009-2010 National Cherry Queen was to receive a scholarship worth $8,250, and each of the final four Cherry Queen candidates received a scholarship award of at least $1,250.
