Author signs book

Empire — Anna Egan Smucker, author of the children's book "To Keep the South Manitou Light," will sign her book from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, at the Philip A. Hart Visitor Center, 9922 Front St. The book is written for readers from 8 to 12 years old. For details, call 326-5135, ext. 320.

Birds on the brain

Mancelona — Parents and children are invited to a program on birds at the Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies, 7526 Sunset Tr. NE.

"Birds on the Brain" will be held 7-8 p.m. Thursday, July 12. Following a birding walk, participants will make a birding journal and a suet feeder. For details or reservations, call 587-8686 or email paul.w@ausable.org

Leelanau MARSP

Leland — Reservations are due Friday, July 13, for the Wednesday, July 18, meeting of the Leelanau County Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel.

The lunch meeting will start at 11:50 a.m. at the Bluebird. The cost is $12 and members are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items for a local food bank. For reservations or details, call 271-3689.

Tour Pearl Lake

Benzie County — The Benzie Conservation District will sponsor a Pearl Lake water tour on Saturday, July 14.

The tour will be held 9 a.m.-noon. Participants should meet at the Pearl Lake DNR public access site on Wagner Road. They may bring their own boat or reduced-rate rentals will be available. A $5 donation is suggested. Reservations are recommended; call 882-4391 or email mike@benziecd.org.

Tax relief clinic

East Lansing — Traverse City is one of the stops on a tour by the Michigan State University College of Law Mobile Law Clinic.

Five student clinicians from the Alvin L. Storrs Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic will be in Traverse City from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 15, at the Traverse Area District Library, 610 Woodmere Ave. The students will help low-income residents with their tax disputes.

Teen reading club

Traverse City — Teens and pre-teens are invited to sign up for Peninsula Community Library's "Own the Night" Teen Summer Reading Club.

Teens can make a dream catcher, enjoy pizza and snacks and sign up to earn gift cards starting at 6 p.m. Monday, July 16, at the library, 2699 Island View Road. Call 223-7700 or visit peninsulacommunitylibrary.org to learn more.

Garden club meets

Kalkaska — Kalkaska High School's class of 1997 invites classmates, friends and teachers to a reunion.
