Library offers e-reader workshops

TRAVERSE CITY — Amy

Barritt said the questions she

answers at the Traverse Area

District Library’s circulation

desk have changed considerably

in the last year.

“Three-quarters of my time

on the desk is spent answering

questions about e-readers,” said

Barritt, a reference librarian,

who spends one-on-one time

with patrons to help them use

their devices.

In an effort to better serve the

community, the Traverse Area

District Library will offer free

e-reader workshops beginning

Thursday, Jan. 12, through March

1. Classes will be held at the

main branch and are specific to

the brand of e-reader, including

Nook, Kindle and iPad.

“We really will cover all the basics

of how to use each specific

device as all require different

downloading processes,” said

Kristen Talaga, marketing and

communications director at the

library.

Talaga said the demand for

e-books also has grown since the

library began offering downloadable

e-books and e-audiobooks

last March.

“In December we had 1,500 ebook

downloads,” she said.

Currently, anyone living within

the TADL taxing district — including

Grand Traverse County

and Elmwood, Almira and

Inland townships — and has a

valid library account can download

up to 10 e-books at a time.

TADL’s collection includes

more than 900 unique e-book

titles with more on the way.

“We have recently placed a big

order and will have a lot more

titles to offer soon,” Talaga said.

In addition, e-books also are

available under the terms of

the Project Gutenberg License,

offering more than 34,000 free

public domain titles that are

available to anyone, anywhere.

All e-reader workshops are

free, but registration is required.
