• Never in the history of high school plays in the city was there such a decided success scored as Monday evening when the class of 1911 presented "The Merchant of Venice Up-to-Date". The production was under the direction and supervision of Miss Shaffer, teacher of German and English Literature. The cast of characters were well chosen and it would seem that each one was especially adapted to the part.
• Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Hull, Mr. and Mrs. W. D. C. Germaine and their chauffeur left this morning in Mr. Hull's automobile for a ten day tour in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana and Chicago. The route is supposed to be the best automobile roads in Michigan.
• About 40 friends and neighbors of Mr. and Mrs. William C. VanLuven, 401 South Union Street, made a surprise visit Friday evening as a farewell. Mr. and Mrs. VanLuven are about to leave their home on the farm.
• Frank Peck, a clever crook and William McFall, two prisoners in the county jail, escaped today. A woman aided them by smuggling tools into their cells. They drilled through the doors and escaped.
• Two large barns belonging to David Roush, who lives on rural route No. 4, was entirely destroyed by fire Tuesday after being struck by lightning. Mr. Roush was awakened by the light shining into his room and arose to find the barn in flames. All the outbuildings were destroyed.
• Lightning also struck the barn of George Vanderlip during Tuesday night's storm and entirely destroyed it; a team of horses and an old buggy being the only things saved. The loss will exceed several thousand dollars.
• W. M. Gordon, the local mail carrier, has been spending the past five weeks setting out trees and getting his farm in Acme township ready for the season's work. He set out 2,000 trees which are now making him an orchard of 22 acres of cherries, peaches and apples.
• Joseph Maxbauer, Jr. aged 11 years, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Maxbauer, while playing baseball with playmates yesterday afternoon was hit in the throat by a batted ball, sustaining an injury of the cartilage of the larynx. At first it was thought that an operation would be necessary but the little fellow is doing so well at present that no serious effects are anticipated.
• One of the most important deals that has taken place in Leelanau County of recent years has just been consummated whereby S. A. Keyes has sold the popular resort known as "The Clovers," to William Foltz of Daytona, Florida. Mr. Foltz is an old and well-known hotel man, being the manager of the Ivy Lane Inn in Omena.
• The wedding of Mr. George Frye of Williamsburg and Miss Rosina Bullace of Acme took place at the home of Albert Lelters Saturday evening, Rev. Beers performing the ceremony. The immediate relatives were the guests and later in the evening all enjoyed dancing.
• Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Varnquist, living southwest of Northport were pleasantly surprised by about twenty-five of the friends on Sunday last, the occasion being their silver wedding anniversary. After a sumptuous dinner, the afternoon was spent in pleasant socializing. A handsome silver tea set and several pretty gifts were given to the honored guests.
• Advice on deportment. White kid gloves should be worn at a ball and only be taken off at supper time.
• Medical advice of a century ago. The furniture in a sick room should be arranged with a view of cheerfulness and flowers.
