Northern Notes: Quilters making, donating quilts

Members of the Chain of Lakes Quilters Guild are working hard to support the Hopes & Dreams Quilt Challenge for ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis/Lou Gehrig's disease). The quilters are making and donating lap quilts to warm the lives, hearts and laps of ALS patients and also help raise awareness and research money for ALS. So far, the group has completed 16 quilts and is working on several others. The guild has about 35 members and meets the first Tuesday of the month, except July, at Bible Baptist Church in Central Lake. Visitors are welcome. For details, call 599-3462 or 599-2976.

With the Fourth of July two days away, Munson Hospice is doubly excited about a new Veterans Program and the generosity of the Exchange Club of Traverse City.

Through the Veterans Program, when a hospice patient is identified as a veteran, volunteers who are veterans present a flag to the hospice patient with thanks for their service to their country.

"We want the Exchange Club of Traverse City to be recognized and thanked for its donation of 80 American Flags for our new Veterans Program," Munson Hospice and Palliative Care Volunteer Coordinator Judy Goodrich wrote. "We deeply appreciate the Exchange Club for this wonderful donation on behalf of our veteran patients and veteran volunteers."

Ron Barber of Traverse City wrote with a brief but very heartfelt thank you to Stephanie and others at Younker's who helped his mother-in-law when she took a bad fall in the parking lot.

Sherri Freels, officer manager, volunteer and member of the board of directors of the Maritime Heritage Alliance, wrote on behalf of the alliance to thank everyone who contributed to the success of a fundraiser at Little Bohemia that raised almost $1,500 for the organization.

Fundraiser proceeds weren't earmarked for a specific project, Sherri wrote, but MHA is working on several things right now including replacing the deck on the Schooner Madeline and a "History Wall" developed with the help of three Northwestern Michigan College students as part of their class requirement.
