Magic in Leland

Leland — The Leelanau Community Cultural Center will host a "magical" event during the Leland Heritage Celebration on Saturday, Sept. 15.

The Old Art Building, 111 Main St., was built in memory of Walter T. Best, better known as Maro the Magician. It will be the site of an exhibit of poster's from Maro's international magic shows and early photographs of Best and his wife, Allie May Kaiser Best and their home in Leland from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Chris Linn will give a magic show at 4 p.m. Tickets for the show are $5 for adults, $3 for children and $10 per family. They are available by calling 256-2131 or at the door.

From fiber to yarn

Traverse City — In honor of Worldwide Spin in Public Day, Notably Natural Fine Yarns will host a "Spin In" Saturday, Sept. 15.

Spinners are invited to bring their spinning wheels and help demonstrate their art from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Complimentary alpaca fiber will be provided or spinners can work on their own creations. There also will be a potluck; attendees should bring a dish to share.

Breakfast is served

Fife Lake — The Walton Junction Sportman's Club will serve breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the club, 11207 E. County Line Road. The cost is $7 for adults, $2.50 for children ages 5-11 and free for children 4 and younger.

Phi Chapter meets

Traverse City — Delta Kappa Gamma, Traverse City Phi Chapter, will hold its first meeting of the new season Tuesday, Sept. 18.

The group will meet at 5 p.m. at the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District Conference Center. A $6 soup and salad dinner will be served.

Diabetes risks

Traverse City — Cardiologist Nicklaus Slocum, MD, will give a program on diabetes and managing the risk of heart disease or stroke.

The free program will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, in conference room 1 at Munson Medical Center, 1105 Sixth St. A question and answer session will follow.

Forum fundraiser

Leland — The Independent League of Women Voters of Leelanau County will sponsor a forum to raise money to help develop an Independent League of Women Voters chapter in Leelanau County.

The forum starts with dessert at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the Old Art Building. Dr. Ellen Lust, associate professor in the Department of Political Science at Yale University, will discuss "The Politics of Voting in the Middle East" at 7 p.m.

Anti-bullying team

Kalkaska — The Stand Strength Team will present anti-bullying assemblies Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21-22, at Kalkaska High School.

The free assemblies will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. each night. Topics include anti-bullying/violence, anti-peer pressure, anti drugs/alcohol, respecting others, achieving academic excellence and making the right choices.
