- Thompson Brothers in Fife Lake are busily at work on a sawmill which they propose to have running in less than a month. A blacksmith shop is already in working order. Other improvements are planned and soon to be made.
- A number of friends and neighbors surprised Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Stiles at their home near Williamsburg last Friday. Their friends regret to have them leave for their new home at Northport where Mr. Stites and Fred Avery have opened a livery stable.
- Dr. and Mrs. C. A. Clark of Grawn, went to Elk Rapids to spend Thanksgiving with Mrs. Clark's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Veit, but the visit was saddened by the death of Mrs. Clark's father that night. Although he had been confined to his bed for some time with heart trouble, his death was unexpected.
- William Hoffman, a resident at Mapleton, is attending the Needham Business College in Traverse City.
- In spite of the fact that manufacturers of clock works had advised that the only way to make the big clock on the State Bank building strike was to replace the works with regular striking works, the placing of the new bell completed a contrivance invented and designed by C. L. Curtis and now works. The bell was formerly in the Methodist church.
- At the Thanksgiving ball given at the hall in Northport that evening, the prizes were won by the following: Mrs. R. Steele, Miss Helen Putman, Mr. Zelsman and Mr. Gilbert. All were dressed in very creative costumes which gained much applause from the ball attendees.
- The Mancelona Grangers celebrated the last day of November with a chicken pie dinner at which the pioneer members were the guests of honor. An excellent program under the direction of Mrs. Anna R. Doyle was carried out. Mrs. Doyle has been lecturer of this Grange for a number of years.
- Our correspondent at Solon reports that Leonard Herrington has purchased the farm he sold last spring to Frank Marcure. It was too lonesome for them where they bought southeast of town.
- Mr. and Mrs. Felix Miller and their daughter, Mina, who live near Williamsburg, left Saturday for a visit to their old home in Germany. They plan to spend two or three months abroad visiting relatives in several locations.
- Mrs. Dickerman and Warren are happy and comfortable in their new house southwest of the city. They have been living in a tent since the burning of their home June 20. The house is of bungalow design with modern improvements.
- The trees which are to make the village of Northport known as one of the most important fruit centers in the country have been received and are in trenches for the winter preparatory to planting in the spring. There was a carload of them and they came from Vincennes, Indiana where they have been carefully cared for in a nursery preparatory to their transplanting. They are cherry trees of the Northport Black variety.
- Advice on deportment. It is an insult and indicates snobbery to present two fingers when shaking hands. Offer the whole hand.
- Medical advice of a century ago. Slippers and low shoes are to be worn only in warm weather. They expose the blood at the ankles and so encourage colds.
