Boy Scout builds pedestrian bridge

Adam Bergin, 15, a Boy Scout with Troop 27 in Traverse City, built a pedestrian bridge in Honor for his Eagle Scout project.

The Traverse City West Senior High sophomore raised all the necessary funds to construct the bridge, located in Maley Park.

The structure features a metal roof and handicapped accessible ramps.

Bergin earned money by collecting bottles and cans.

Bergin built the bridge, which is 7 feet wide, to accommodate pedestrians, the disabled and bicyclists.

The project was supported by the Honor Area Restoration Project, the Honor Village Council, St. Philip Neri Church in Empire and four Boy Scout troops.

Bergin has held the position of senior patrol leader in Troop 1537 in Plymouth, prior to moving to Traverse City in 2010. He attended the 2010 National Scout Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill in Va.

He will travel in June with Troop 27 to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.

He is the son of Peter and Carol Bergin, of Traverse City.
