Ave Maria meeting

Traverse City — The Thursday, Aug. 16, dinner of the Northern Michigan Ave Maria University Founders Club will feature guest speakers Thomas Monaghan, founder and chancellor of AMU, and Keith Finigan, chairman of U.S. Inspect and a longtime Legatus member.

Registration starts at 5 p.m. at Christ the King Church, 3801 Shore Road, with Mass at 6 p.m. followed by dinner and the program at 7 p.m. The cost is $15; free for students. For details or reservations, call 935-1874.

Biologist gives talk

Omena — The next speaker in the Saving Birds Thru Habitat Speaker Series is Conservation Resource Alliance biologist Eric Ellis.

The program will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, at SBTH Discovery Center, 5020 N. Putnam Road. Ellis spent three years in Mongolia as a Peace Corps volunteer, translator and fly fishing/horse riding guide. He will discuss the ecosystems and species of Mongolia, current threats to the systems and local efforts to protect them.

Big Band performs

Traverse City — Singer/songwriter Miriam Pico will join the Bay Area Big Band Thursday, Aug. 16, for a concert on the lawn at the Grand Traverse Pavilions, South Elmwood Avenue.

'Fruit of the Vine'

Traverse City — Zonta of Leelanau County will celebrate wine and food pairings at a "Fruit of the Vine" fundraiser for scholarships and programs in Leelanau County.

The event will be hosted from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, at Crain Hill Vineyards, 9720 S. Center Highway. There also will be a live auction.

Bible study starts

Traverse City — Community Bible Study for women is accepting registrations for the fall session.

The interdenominational, in-depth bible study will meet from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 11 through May 7, at Faith Reformed Church, 1139 E. Front St. Study will focus on the gospel of Mark and the books of Job and James.

Raven Hill is free

East Jordan — Raven Hill Discovery Center admission is free on Saturday, Aug. 11.

From noon to 4 p.m., visitors can explore the indoor and outdoor exhibits including five new sculptures recently installed in the Ancient World Exhibit. Jory Jonas from the Great Lakes Fisheries Research Station also will be on hand to share information on pond dwellers.

Devotionals close

Traverse City — A series of Dixieland Devotionals with music by the Backroom Gang will conclude Wednesday, Aug. 15.

The program starts at 7 p.m. at The Presbyterian Church of Traverse City, 701 Westminster. An offering will be collected for local charities.

North Manitou trip

Leland — Tickets go on sale Tuesday, Aug. 14, for a day trip to North Manitou Island.

The Thursday, Sept. 6, trip is sponsored by the Leelanau Historical Society. The cost is $60 for members; $75 for non-members. This includes boat fare, park fee, guides, continental breakfast and a box lunch.

Reader's Theatre

Traverse City — "Aged to Perfection," the newest division of Old Town Playhouse for people 55 and older, will present two new staged readings.

The readings will start at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 15-16, at the Old Town Playhouse Studio Theatre at the depot, East Eighth Street and Woodmere Avenue. There is no charge, but donations will be accepted. For details, call 947-2210.

Adoption support

Traverse City — Bethany Christian Services will offer a new support group for families who have adopted through the Michigan foster care system and a free adoption and foster care information meeting.

The support group will meet for the first time from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, at Bethany Christian Services, 1055 Carriage Hill Dr. For details or reservations, call 590-8644. Meetings continue on the second Tuesday of each month.

TCL&P's 100th

Traverse City — Traverse City Light & Power will celebrate its 100th anniversary tonight, Aug. 10, at Friday Night Live.

The utility will be at the corner of Front and Cass streets starting at 5:30 p.m. with an energy efficient bike demo, hard hats for the first 500 children, free compact fluorescent light bulbs for adults while supplies last and a special 100th anniversary Morsel.

Traverse City — NASCAR Joe Gibbs Racing #11 FedEx Toyota Camry will be at BrittenLocal, 2662 Cass Road, today from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors can have photos taken with the car, visit with JGR race team members and have refreshments.

Bay Day Saturday

Traverse City — Bay Day will be celebrated from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at Clinch Park.

Visitors can enjoy free goodie bags, Baykeeper Wave ice cream, Bay Monitor tugboat rides and hands-on environmental activities. Volunteers also are needed at 11 a.m. to help clean up cigarette butts. Cleaning gear will be provided.

Taizé at labyrinth

Northport — The community is invited to "Taizé on the Labyrinth" Tuesday, Aug. 14, at Cross Farms, 11966 E. Sugar Bush Road.

The combined labyrinth walk and interfaith singing meditation starts at 7 p.m. and is free.

It will feature Northport's Recorder Consort and the Pipesqueaks.

Attendees are reminded to bring their own lawn chairs.
