13 area hockey players get recognition

Cadillac goalie Boike earns All-State Dream Team honors

TRAVERSE CITY -- Thirteen area student-athletes have been named to the 2009-10 all-state hockey team, including Cadillac's Mike Boike earning a spot as the Dream Team goaltender.

The 13 are part of what Traverse City West coach Jeremy Rintala thinks is the largest number of area players to earn all-state hockey honors.

Boike was a big reason the Vikings were able to make a run to the Division 3 quarterfinals and finish the season 20-5-1 despite rarely outshooting their opponents.

The Vikings' Will Badner was a first-team selections, as was Traverse City West's Shane Totten and TC Central's Jared VanWormer.

Totten led the Titans with 47 points and became the school's all-time leading scorer as West made its longest playoff run in school history, making it to the state semifinals.

VanWormer led the Trojans in scoring, and is also a top defensive forward. He notched 20 goals and 23 assists.

TC West goaltender Nate Wilson was a second-team pick in Division 1, while forward Mitch Snider and defenseman Chris Dienes were honorable mention picks.

Central's Alex Wietrick and Bay Reps forward Jake Peacock were second-teamers in Division 2, while Reps blueliners Jake Soenen and Eric Jones were honorable mention.

The Reps also made a long run, reaching the Division 2 quarterfinals, giving area teams three representatives in the quarterfinal.

Cadillac forward P.J. O'Hagan and defender Eric Hoblet were Division 3 second-team picks.
