West hockey finishes season with tie

Traverse City West finished out the regular season with a tie with Sault Ste. Marie in a matchup of two ranked teams.

The Titans led 2-0 early, on the strength of goals by Nick Vandekieft and Alex Grizzell.

Vandekieft got West off to a quick start, striking 33 seconds into the game off a Chris Dienes assist. Grizzell's goal was set up by Shane Totten and Jake Gillis.

But the Blue Devils would knot it up at 2-2 before the period's end.

Totten's short-handed wrister -- with a Frank Gilbert assist -- put West up 3-2 going into the third before the Division 3 No. 3-ranked Soo tied it up and the teams played a scoreless eight-minute overtime session.

Dylan Snider made 29 saves for Division 1 No. 7 West (14-9-1), which awaits the winner of Marquette and Manistee in next Thursday's regional semifinals.

The Soo hosts Traverse City Central tonight.
