KALKASKA -- Helene Wilson glared at accused murderer David DeJonge as an evidence technician testified about items found during a vehicle search.
DeJonge, 46, of Bloomfield Township, is charged with an open count of murder and mutilation of a body in the death of Wilson's daughter Sarah Wilson, 26. Police found her torso in a swampy area of Kalkaska County's Oliver Township on May 22, 2008, 10 days after her parents reported her missing.
Testimony in DeJonge's trial began Thursday and continued Friday after three full days of jury selection. Kalkaska Prosecutor Brian Donnelly, who plans to call about 50 witnesses, said the trial could span more than four weeks.
Latex gloves, trash bags, a flashlight, women's clothes and other items allegedly were found in a sport-utility vehicle after officers searched DeJonge's residence, Bloomfield Township evidence technician Allan Ruprecht said.
Blood and more items of female clothing were discovered in another SUV vehicle that was covered in mud and pine needles, Ruprecht said.
Wilson knew DeJonge for several years and lived with him in Bloomfield Township. DeJonge was supposed to drop her off at her parents' Big Rapids home before continuing to a cabin his family owns in Kalkaska County's Orange Township.
Investigators later found what they believe to be Wilson's blood on multiple items in the cabin. They eventually located her remains after matching a set of tire tracks in the cabin's driveway to vehicle tracks near the edge of Mecum Road.
Investigators believe DeJonge left the area and returned multiple times after the crime, Donnelly said, and they think the torso was moved at least once. Wilson's death likely occurred near the cabin, police believe.
DeJonge, clad in a blue blazer and khakis, appeared clean-cut and cheerful during the trial. He at times jotted notes and made small talk with bailiffs during breaks in court proceedings.
Bloomfield Township Capt. Steve Cook also testified that he went to the Oakland County Jail to retrieve a book after another inmate there told police something about DeJonge.
DeJonge was held there on unrelated drug charges shortly before being brought to Kalkaska on the murder and mutilation charges.
An inmate testified during a July 2008 preliminary examination that DeJonge allegedly told other inmates during a card game that he "chopped up his girl and got rid of her."
