Munson embezzler gets prison

TRAVERSE CITY — A woman accused of embezzling more than $1 million from Munson Hospital’s foundation is headed to prison.

Former Munson accountant Susan J. Morrison was sentenced today in U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids to 46 months in prison. She also was ordered to pay about $1.17 million in restitution.

She pleaded guilty in September to wire fraud and money laundering in a deal that required her to admit stealing $1.105 million.

Morrison illegally transferred about $1.105 million from Munson’s Regional Healthcare Foundation’s bank account to her former business Great Lakes Bear Factory of Traverse City, between October 2007 and April 2011. Court documents indicate she used the money “for her personal enjoyment,” including the purchase of dozens of boxes of sports trading cards.

Morrison is required to forfeit any funds or property gained from the crime. In addition to $36,653 already seized from Traverse City State Bank and Huntington National Bank, the guilty pleas include a money judgment for the remaining $1.068 million.
