TRAVERSE CITY — A family of four escaped a Leelanau County house fire.
Elmwood Township Fire Chief Keith Tampa credits a working smoke detector for alerting the family to the blaze shortly after 1 a.m. Tuesday at 9536 S. West-Bay Shore Drive.
"The whole family was asleep," Tampa said. "I believe that smoke detector, that little $10 investment, saved their lives."
The fire spread throughout the main floor of the two-story log cabin style home. Tampa said flames reached the second floor, but crews saved an attached garage and belongings inside.
Tampa couldn't provide a damage estimate and said the cause remains under investigation.
The family stayed the night at a friend's home, Tampa said.
Firefighters remained on scene through Tuesday morning and were assisted by Suttons Bay, Cedar, Traverse City and Peninsula Township fire departments.
