Pedestrian killed on M-115

TRAVERSE CITY -- Michigan State Police are investigating a fatal collision involving a pedestrian near the Manistee-Benzie counties line.

Authorities said a man from the Copemish area was walking along M-115 near Kurick Road on Monday at 10:05 p.m. when a car traveling east struck the him. The pedestrian died at the scene.

The driver, from the Mesick area, was not injured. The accident is under investigation. Authorities did not release names and ages of the victim or driver.

Deputies and first responders from both Benzie and Manistee counties responded.

Heroin overdose kills man

Benzie County's struggle with fatal heroin overdoses continues. Authorities confirmed Justin Smith, 23, of Benzonia, was found dead Wednesday night of a heroin overdose. Law enforcement officials arrested a suspect in Smith's death, the fourth heroin-related fatality in the county since 2011.
