Auto and Diesel Technicians Night at NMC Tuesday

TRAVERSE CITY — Career exploration is on deck at Tuesday evening's Auto and Diesel Technicians Night.

Job seekers and students can talk with educators and employers in the field. The focused recruiting event will allow participants to explore options while current technicians can network and learn about the latest technologies.

The event will be at Northwestern Michigan College's Aero Park Campus and participants include: AIS Construction Equipment, Baker College, Belle Tire, Bill Marsh Automotive Group, Team Elmer's, Ferris State University, Fox Motors, Marathon Automotive, Northwest Michigan Works, NMC and Williams Auto Group.

The event is hosted by the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments, Northwest Michigan Works and Northwestern Michigan College.

Displays of cars, equipment and new technologies will be on hand.

Attendees can learn skills needed to break into and move up in the industry. In addition, people looking for a job can work with Northwest Michigan Works staff on job search strategies and also register for a statewide online employment network.

"The auto and diesel service industry is fast-paced with lots of technological advances," said Jaclyn Sanborn, the Council of Government's business connections manager. "This event is an opportunity to celebrate the industry and learn about the latest technology. It also gives local employers a chance to talk about their businesses and meet local talent."

The first annual Auto and Diesel Technicians Night showcases collaborations among businesses, educators and employers and what they offer the community. Numerous other programs, events and activities presented jointly by NWMCOG and Northwest Michigan Works are held to match employers and talent.

"(The event) aligns with the NWMCOG's mission to strengthen community and the Northwest Michigan Works' mission to improve economic well-being by connecting employers to talent to achieve productivity and prosperity and by connecting job seekers and students to opportunities to contribute toward that prosperity," Sanborn said. "Both of these connections result in community-wide benefits."

Rich King, the fixed operations director at Bill Marsh, travels four times a year to similar out-of-state recruiting events. He said the 50 to 60 employers at these events, most local to the area, are looking to hire people that day.

Having a local Auto and Diesel Technicians Night will boost prospects for employers and employees.

"It's a way for us to start forming relationships," he said. "It's good to have one in our backyard."
