TRAVERSE CITY-- City planners will press ahead with an east-side neighborhood zoning change that will require wider lots.
The Traverse City planning commission scheduled a Sept. 5 public hearing to consider rezoning the Cromwell Terrace Neighborhood, which includes Cromwell, Belmont, Woodland and Terrace drives. The area currently is zoned to allow for 35-foot wide lots, but neighbors expressed a desire to reduce the potential for lot splits and to provide for more spacious lots.
The proposed change would increase lot widths to a minimum of 90 feet and 9,000 square feet in lot area. Most of the subdivision's lots measure 100 feet.
Commissioner Jeanine Easterday, who also serves on the planning board, said residents appeared "quite appreciative" that the city is willing to proceed with the zoning change. After a public hearing, the planning commission will send a recommendation to the city commission for a vote.
The planning commission wants more information before initiating a similar rezoning process in the Indian Woods area neighborhood. That location, around East Bay Park, has a wider variety of lot sizes, and the board wants a review of possible zoning modifications before proceeding, said city Planner Russ Soyring.
"We didn't have enough detail, and it seemed like it was a separate issue," Easterday said.
