KALKASKA — A 60-year-old woman was shot in the back by a neighbor in Kalkaska County, authorities said.
The victim, Claudia Ann Roberts, was airlifted to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City following the Saturday night shooting at a residence on Country Road.
Roberts was in stable condition at the hospital Sunday morning, Kalkaska County Sheriff David Israel said.
Israel said dispatchers received a report of a woman shot Saturday at 9:30 p.m. at the residence. Deputies arrived and found Roberts on the floor of the home with a gunshot wound to the back.
An investigation indicated a 61-year-old male neighbor broke into the woman’s home and shot her, Israel said.
A motive was not immediately disclosed.
"The victim and relatives were able to tell police that the…neighbor had come to the home and kicked open the door and shot the victim with a rifle as she attempted to run away from him," Israel said.
The suspect’s identity was not released.
He was located at his home on Priest Road and arrested at 5 a.m.
Kalkaska County prosecutor Michael Perreault charged the suspect with attempted murder and a felony firearms charge.
