Protections for everyone

Kudos to the Traverse

City commissioners for

their strong statement of

resistance to any attempt

by the state Legislature

to negate local ordinances

such as the recently

and overwhelmingly approved

non-discrimination

ordinance protecting

the rights of any and all

of us based on our sexual

orientation.

How is it that those who

protest the loudest about

limiting the intrusiveness

of “government” in our

lives are the first to urge

the government to intervene

to overturn anything

that they disagree with?

Everyone should enjoy

the same protections under

the law. Everyone.

In 1976 there were those

in Michigan that thought

the Civil Rights Act gave

special status to certain

segments of the population

because of the color

of their skin. Looking

back, only the ignorant or

bigoted would make that

argument now. Thirtyfive

years from now I

believe that no one will

question the wisdom and

fair-mindedness of the

people of Traverse City

and other localities for

protecting the rights of

all their citizens.
