A unique resource

One of the nicest gifts the Traverse City community received this holiday season was the history of the Hickory Hills ski area called "Light the Night." This delightful book, just out, is the work of local high school students Molly Tompkins and Ryan Ness, both of whom also happen to be skiers and "veterans" of the local ski hill.

Packed with photos going back to Hickory's beginnings in the early 1950s, we see the faces of the men and women who literally created this ski facility on the west side of town. Operated then and now by the city, thousands of kids have learned to ski here.

Molly and Ryan have done a tremendous service by so carefully compiling this information. Little did they know how big a project this would turn out to be, but they were more than up to the challenge. The results are splendid.

We hope that TC continues to financially support Hickory Hills and that many more generations of local kids will enjoy this unique resource.
