Ties that guide

Michigan State University is working on a project in our region called Community Ties.

The purpose of the project is to promote ties between businesses and nonprofits in the community and students and ultimately keep intelligence in the area after graduation.

The Web site is based on profiles created by business professionals detailing their career and how they got to where they are so students can see what cool options are open in our own area.

This is a great asset to students as businesses can also post intern and volunteer opportunities to provide students with real-life experiences.

Businesses also benefit from their participation on the Community Ties Web site through social networking and community development.

A special day

Jan. 17 was an awesome day at Mt. Holiday, where more than 200 Detroit teenagers spent the day learning to ski and snowboard.

Mt. Holiday's excellent snow sports instructors rose to the occasion, teaching them to balance, snowplow, ride the rope tow and use the chairlift.

I was fortunate to see first-hand how these kids experienced snow sports for the first time.

Shaky and nervous at first, they could hardly stand up on the skis. But by the day's end, skills were acquired.

They were skiing the slopes, cheering each other on, so proud of their new skills. We cheered right along with them.

I'm proud of Mt. Holiday's instructors, lift operators, maintenance crew and ski patrol, who work together so days like that can happen.

Mt. Holiday is a gem continuously being discovered by children of all ages.

My hope is that our community continues to support Mt. Holiday so kids from all over will always have this very special place.
