Claire Posner, a native of Suttons Bay, continues to blog from Japan, where she's been living near Tokyo for the past two years.
In her latest post, she describes a special lever on vending machines that provides free drinks in "an emergency." The Japanese don't use this lever in non-emergencies, and that doesn't surprise her.
She's also not surprised by the dignity with which the people have responded to the ongoing crisis there. "Deeply inspired," she writes, "but not surprised."
Yet Posner says the same social order that inspires in these hard times can also be "most frustrating in less troubling times."
