TCL&P considers solar power

Company looks for consumer support for green initiative

TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Light & Power board will consider a solar generation project at its next meeting.

The city utility board meets today at 5:15 p.m. at the Governmental Center to vote on pursuing plans for local solar generation. The board will consider asking customers if they are interested in signing up for a more expensive "green rate" to fund the project, a site for which has not been determined.

Light & Power would need to find 59 customers willing to pay an additional $16 monthly to purchase one "sun block," equal to a 100-kilowatt hour of sun generation. The solar power would replace a 100-kilowatt hour of mostly coal generation.

The utility estimated the 50-kilowatt "photovoltaic generation" project could cost about $250,000 and would require two acres or less to build, said Jim Cooper, manager of communications and energy services. Cooper said the utility would "look for a site" after gauging customer interest.

Board Chairman Patrick McGuire said utility staff wants "an indication from the board" to determine if it's "worth going ahead" with the solar project. Today's decision would not be the final vote, officials said.

McGuire said the solar project has been among the utility's plans for a while, and "it's been slowly coming together," he said.

Today's decision will help "get it off dead center" and "cross it off the list one way or another," he said.
