Road request won't be on Aug. ballot

TRAVERSE CITY -- Voters in Grand Traverse County won't decide a road millage proposal until November, leaving a single measure on the August primary ballot.

County board officials this week agreed to place a county Commission on Aging request to renew a half-mill levy on the August primary ballot. The COA currently is receiving 0.4858 mills because of Headlee Amendment rollbacks; renewed, the millage would raise an estimated $2.24 million in 2012, its first year on tax bills, and last until 2018.

Commission on Aging officials requested no other millages appear on the August ballot, and voiced concern that other tax measures could create voter backlash and harm their chances. The county board agreed and moved to November a county road commission request for 1 mill for four years to "repair, maintain, and improve existing" county, village and city roads. The county road millage would raise an estimated $4.48 million in 2011, the first year it would appear on tax bills if adopted by voters.
