TRAVERSE CITY — A police officer is expected to attend tonight’s Traverse City school board meeting to provide security.

Superintendent Steve Cousins said the decision is to ensure discussion remains civil as school board members consider adding sexual orientation to a list of protected groups in the school district’s policy against bullying.

The topic is not on tonight’s agenda, but public comment on the issue can be heard at the end of the meeting. It begins at 6 p.m. at the district’s administration building, 412 Webster St. in Traverse City.

Cousins said an officer also is expected to be present at an April 20 policy committee meeting, where guidelines for enforcement will be discussed, as well as the April 25 board study session at which the policy could be adopted.
