In Business: Old Town deck to be 'green'

TRAVERSE CITY — It's big, bulky and beige, but there's also a green tinge to the Old Town parking deck.

The city is striving for a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification for its new $7.9 million parking structure by implementing various energy-saving and environmental features. The deck will feature a "green roof" with natural plantings on its stairwell towers to reduce storm run-off, and solar panels to help offset energy costs.

The deck also utilized pre-cast concrete fittings for its shell, will be fitted with energy-efficient lighting and will feature pervious concrete in some sections to further reduce water runoff.

"We wanted it to be environmentally friendly, and for (the) most part we achieved that," said Rob Bacigalupi, acting director of the Downtown Development Authority.

Learn more about the project, and its potential impact on the Old Town district, in today's Business section.
