Coast Guard rescues Manitou kayaker

GLEN ARBOR TOWNSHIP (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard says an aircrew from its air station in Traverse City rescued a male kayaker who was stranded on South Manitou Island in northern Lake Michigan.

The Coast Guard didn’t release the name of the man, who was met by emergency medical personnel back in Traverse City and released in good condition Saturday evening.

South Manitou Island is part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and is about 30 miles northwest of Traverse City. It’s in Leelanau County’s Glen Arbor Township and is about seven miles from shore.

The Coast Guard says it got notice of the stranded kayaker about 5 p.m. Saturday and sent out a, MH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter.
