Six make cut for TCAPS superintendent job

Interviews will be conducted with each candidate

TRAVERSE CITY — School board members in Traverse City will interview six candidates for superintendent.

Three of the applicants to advance are from Michigan, while the other three live in Georgia, Nevada and Ohio.

Board members met this week to review candidates to replace Superintendent James Feil, who will leave the district July 1. Twenty-three people applied, but 22 were reviewed after one withdrew.

The narrowed field includes:

-- Monique Beels, assistant superintendent for academic services, Novi Community School District

-- Stephen Cousins, superintendent, Reeths-Puffer Schools, Muskegon

-- Michael (Jon) Dean, assistant superintendent for human resources, Birmingham Public Schools in Oakland County

-- Thomas Goodney, deputy superintendent of Educational Service Center of Central Ohio, in Columbus, Ohio

-- Elisabeth Noonan, chief academic officer, Washoe County School District, Reno, Nev.

-- Joseph Redden, consultant for executive management development, Marietta, Ga.

"We felt that each of these candidates on paper looked like they had experiences that would serve them well," board member Kelly Hall said. "We wanted someone who would be comfortable leading not only curriculum but finance."

The candidates also are the six recommended by the Michigan Leadership Institute, the firm board members hired to lead the search.

"I would say that we concurred with the search firm's recommendation," Hall said. "Trust me, we examined every applicant."

Interview dates have been reserved for 6 p.m. May 6 and May 11-12 at the district's administration building, 412 Webster St. in Traverse City. Specific interview times have not been finalized. Meetings will be public and televised on Channel 98.
