Spectrum among top 10 systems in nation

TRAVERSE CITY — Spectrum Health is rated among the top 10 health systems in the country by a national health rating firm.

The Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals program awarded Grand Rapids-based Spectrum with its Health Systems Benchmarks honor, rating it among the top 10 health systems in the U.S. based on analysis of its clinical quality and efficiency.

"The fact that we are one of 10 in the nation and the only health system in Michigan to earn this award is a tremendous reflection on the efforts of our physicians and staff at all our facilities," Spectrum President and CEO Richard Breon said in a statement.

Thomson Reuters, based in New York, assessed 255 U.S. health systems that include at least two general, non-federal hospitals. Researchers review eight categories to gauge quality and efficiency including mortality rates, length of hospital stays, medical complications, patient safety, re-admission rates and other factors.

Both Spectrum and Munson Medical Center in Traverse City are included in Thomson's Top 100 Hospital rating. Munson is a 12-time recipient of the Top 100 ranking.
