Scrudato plans run for state House

Retired TC teacher will be Democratic write-in candidate

TRAVERSE CITY — A former special education teacher and union leader in Traverse City plans a campaign for the state House.

John Scrudato, who retired this year from teaching with Traverse City Area Public Schools, intends to be a Democratic write-in candidate for the 104th state House district on the August primary ballot.

He was president of the Traverse City Education Association, which represents school teachers, counselors, social workers and nurses.

"The two most pressing issues in this state right now are education and jobs," Scrudato said Tuesday. "I'd just like to go down there and just convince both sides to get something done."

As a former teacher, Scrudato said education is one of the primary issues he would push in Lansing — namely, increasing state funding for public schools.

But, he said, jobs go hand-in-hand with education: There's no reason the Grand Traverse region couldn't attract high-tech jobs with an educated workforce, much like Ann Arbor attracted Google, while still maintaining a tourist economy.

"We can do both," Scrudato said. "Why don't we look at pushing those options up here?"

Incumbent state Rep. Wayne Schmidt, R-Traverse City, will face East Bay Township Supervisor Glen Lile in the Republican primary.

No Democrats currently are on the ticket, according to the Grand Traverse County clerk's office.

Scrudato will need to file a Declaration of Intent form by 4 p.m. July 23.

The number of votes Scrudato will need in the primary race depends on the greater of two formulas, said a spokesman with the Michigan Secretary of State and the Bureau of Elections.

In one, he would need 5 percent of the votes cast in the Democratic race with the highest turnout, which could be for governor. In the other, he would need a vote total that equates to a fraction of the population in the 104th District.

That figure was unknown Tuesday evening.
