TRAVERSE CITY -- The Traverse City wing of the National Writers Series plans to launch a scholarship program for student writers in the Grand Traverse region and is expected to hand out $4,500 in the 2010 school year.
Three scholarships of $1,500 will be awarded this year to eligible students with a permanent address in Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska or Leelanau county and who are in 11th or 12th grade, as of May 12, including those who are home-schooled.
Writing categories include poetry, fiction and non-fiction. The contest will be kicked off by Tom Brokaw, author and former NBC news anchor, on May 12, when the National Writers Series hosts Brokaw in Traverse City, said Doug Stanton, a New York Times best-selling author who resides in Traverse City and who launched the Writers Series here.
Submissions will be accepted from May 12 through July 29, and winners will be announced in September. Visit www.gtrcf.org/scholarships for complete submission instructions and to begin the application process.
