Group proposes Commons site for train

TRAVERSE CITY — A group of mini-train supporters proposed this morning to locate the city’s small steam train on city parkland at the southwest corner of Division and West 11th Street near the Grand Traverse Commons.

The proposal by the group Spirit of Traverse City is just one response to the city’s request for proposals for the train. City commissioners voted earlier this year to remove the train from its bayfront location to accommodate planned park renovations.

The city gave groups interested in the train until Thursday to submit proposals for its next home.

The Spirit group unveiled its ideas at an event this morning at the History Center of Traverse City. The group’s proposed location keeps the train in the city limits. The group proposes to store the train for a year while it raises $1.5 million to build a train park at the site. The proposal includes a train museum and shed at the location.

Mayor Michael Estes said this week he wants to reach a decision on the winning proposal and the train’s future site in June.
