Seven communities get growth grants

TRAVERSE CITY — Seven local communities received community growth grants as part of this week’s Grand Vision Your Action event.

Grants were awarded through the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments and Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce, funded through the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, for projects related to The Grand Vision community planning effort.

Awards of $10,000 went to Elmwood Township to develop a corridor plan for the Greilickville business district, to Acme Township to develop a waterfront growth plan and to Honor village for a community recreation plan. The Kalkaska village Downtown Development Authority will receive $10,000 and technical assistance to improve commerce and pedestrian traffic in the downtown area.

Other awards include $7,000 for Elk Rapids village for engineering work for a recently acquired waterfront parcel downtown, and $5,000 to Ellsworth village for marketing its downtown and farmers market. Mesick village will receive technical assistance from NMCOG to update its master plan.
