Possible city ballot ideas debated

TRAVERSE CITY — City commissioners will discuss three possible ballot proposals, including the potential sale of cemetery property, at a Monday meeting.

The city commission meets at 7 p.m. at the Governmental Center. Scheduled for discussion — but not a commission vote — are three possible ballot proposals to put before city voters Nov. 6.

Commissioners will discuss selling a portion of Oakwood Cemetery for development, a proposal that requires a public vote. Proceeds from that property sale likely would have to be split among the taxing entities, according to a city attorney memo.

Commissioners will talk about asking voters to approve the disposal of up to a 30-foot wide parkland strip along Division Street’s west side, between 14th and Eighth streets, for right of way and intersection improvements.

A third potential ballot proposal also deals with Division Street. Commissioners will consider asking voters to authorize the use of a 66-foot wide strip of parkland that runs east and west between Elmwood and Division streets to create an 8½ Street.

The commission must approve the ballot proposals by Aug. 27 for them to appear before voters in November. Commissioners could schedule their votes for July 16 if they wish to pursue a public vote on any of the proposals.
