Bring your paddle to N. Mich.

SUTTONS BAY — A school district near Traverse City has fixed its finances. Soon it wants to celebrate with a life jacket and paddle.

The Suttons Bay district hopes 2,000 people in canoes or kayaks will band together to form a world-record “floatilla” on Sept. 1 in Grand Traverse Bay.

The district with more than 700 students was facing a deficit last year. But officials tell the Detroit Free Press that Suttons Bay turned it around, thanks to donations from the public, money from an American Indian tribe and other financial moves.

High school senior Madeline Hall wants kayaks and canoes from all over Michigan to hit the water in eight weeks. The registration fee is $10 if people sign up before Aug. 15.
