Acme Twp. planners reject site rezoning

ACME — Township planners unanimously voted to reject a proposed rezoning that would have allowed a shopping center on 48 acres on U.S. 31 just north of Kmart.

Planners rejected the rezoning because of the large amount of land the township already has rezoned for shopping centers and because the site's outside of the area planned for that type of development, said Jay Zollinger, planning commission chairman.

Monday night's hearing on the proposed rezoning followed a public hearing on a site plan review for a proposed Meijer store on M-72 at Lautner Road. The two proposals drew more than 350 people to the hearings. The Meijer review will continue before the planning commission at its Sept. 26 meeting.

The recommendation to reject local restaurateur Rick Steckley's U.S. 31 rezoning request goes to the township board for a final decision on Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. unless Steckley requests a postponement.
