Robbery victim identifies attacker

One charged, charges expected for second suspect

TRAVERSE CITY — Police arrested two men who they believe robbed another man during a night of drinking.

Dakota George Stevens, 30, is charged with a count of unarmed robbery after a Saturday morning incident, and Gregory Sawmick, 30, is expected to be charged with strong armed robbery and aggravated assault.

Neither had been arraigned late Tuesday.

Officers arrested Sawmick not long after the incident, and picked up Stevens at a relative's house on Baldwin Street late Tuesday morning.

Traverse City Police Capt. Steve Morgan and another officer were walking on Union Street shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday when a visibly distraught man approached them.

"He rode up on his bike all bloodied up and conveyed to us that he'd been beat up and robbed down by the Union Street Dam," Morgan said.

The officers went to the area and identified two suspects, both of whom ran away. Officers caught Sawmick and said he had the victim's wallet, watch and other items.

The victim identified Stevens as an attacker and said he knew him from school. Morgan said his department has had several run-ins with Stevens, and police found him at a relative's house on Tuesday.

It appeared Sawmick and the victim had been drinking, Morgan said.
