TRAVERSE CITY — Three reporters recently joined the Record-Eagle's award-winning news staff.
Michael Walton and Anne Stanton joined the newspaper in early November. Angie Jackson came aboard in late January.
Walton is from Grosse Pointe and studied at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. He worked on the student newspaper throughout college as a criminal justice reporter, video reporter and video editor. In 2011 he was selected to serve as an intern for a watchdog journalism program at Northwestern, where he primarily researched conflicts of interest amongst state and local elected officials in Illinois.
Walton spent a year as a reporter at a newspaper in Española, N.M., where he covered county government, politics and criminal justice.
In Traverse City his primary coverage assignments include Grand Traverse County government and Traverse City Area Public Schools.
Walton can be reached at 933-1478 or mwalton@record-eagle.com.
Stanton previously wrote for Northern Express, the Sacramento Bee, Traverse Magazine, the Detroit News, the Detroit Free Press, and Hour Detroit. She worked for the Traverse City Record-Eagle in the early '90s.
She has won numerous national and state awards, including the John F. Kennedy award for a Record-Eagle team-reported series on area poverty.
Stanton holds a bachelor's degree in business from the University of Michigan, where she also earned a master's in journalism.
Stanton has also worked as a freelance editor, including assisting her husband Doug Stanton with two best-selling, nonfiction books. She is a co-founder of the National Writers Series, a year-round book festival.
Stanton's reporting assignments include health care, social services and Northwestern Michigan College. She can be reached at 933-1488 or astanton@record-eagle.com.
Jackson graduated from Michigan State University in May with a journalism degree. She joined the Record-Eagle after a seven-month internship with the Grand Rapids Press/MLive Media Group. She previously interned at the Colorado Springs Gazette and wrote for Capital News Service at MSU. Jackson grew up in Rochester Hills.
Jackson is a general assignment reporter. She may be reached at 933-1416 or ajackson@record-eagle.com.
The Record-Eagle has been named the Michigan Press Association's Newspaper of the Year in its circulation category six consecutive years, and seven of the last eight years.
