Memorial Friday for vet who died in fire

TRAVERSE CITY — A memorial service is planned for Friday for a Kingsley man who died in a house fire.

Clifford Merrick, a World War II veteran who survived the Battle of the Bulge, died early Saturday at his home on Jackson Road. A fire broke out around 4 a.m., destroying the house and injuring Merrick's wife, Sally, and a disabled woman who stayed with the couple.

A memorial gathering is scheduled for Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Funeral services are planned for July.
