TRAVERSE CITY — A Mancelona man is linked to an illegal scheme that funneled more than $17,000 from a Williamsburg orchard, deputies said.

Grand Traverse County authorities charged Adam Carl Calo, 25, with uttering and publishing, a felony punishable by up to 14 years in prison.

Calo attempted to cash a $560 check from Uncle Bill's Orchard, but the bank refused to cash it because the account was flagged for suspicious activity, court records show. Donnie Ray Keeton, 52, of Kalkaska, is accused of stealing the orchard's checkbook, then distributing blank checks to friends, including Calo.
