Child pornography charges brought

TRAVERSE CITY — Federal authorities arrested a Grand Traverse County resident who police said possessed more than 50,000 child porn images.

The Grand Traverse Sheriff's Department said federal authorities arrested a local resident on charges of distribution of child pornography, possession of child pornography, receipt of child pornography and possession of images of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

Police wouldn't identify the suspect, but federal court records show Albert Joseph Garcia has been charged with those counts. Michigan Secretary of State records show Garcia lives in Peninsula Township.

The sheriff's department in May received a tip that a county resident was uploading child porn images. Investigators obtained a warrant and said they found thousands of images and videos on the suspect's computer and on DVDs during a search of the suspect's home.

Due to the amount of images found, local authorities chose to seek federal prosecution, police said. The suspect was indicted by a grand jury last week and arrested Monday.
