Residents win 'Star of the Year' awards

TRAVERSE CITY — Four area residents who work in the tourism industry were honored with "Star of the Year" awards at the Pure Michigan Governor's Conference on Tourism.

Andrew Reh, executive chef at Shanty Creek Resorts, was named Star of the Year in the culinary category. Reh specializes in using Michigan-grown products in the resort's food menu and helped launch Shanty Creek's "Beer & Boards" event, a micro-brew and ski festival featuring a variety of Michigan beers and menu offerings.

Alex Mowczan of Summerside Properties LLC was named Hotelier of the Year. He owns and operates several lodging properties in Traverse City including Best Western Four Seasons, Cambria Suites and the Comfort Inn. Mowczan's properties have won 10 national awards in recent years.

Two employees at Grand Traverse Resort & Spa in Acme also were honored. Scott Scholten was named "Room Attendant Star of the Year" and Taylor McManus was named "Outstanding Student Star of the Year."

The awards were presented during the "Stars of the Industry" annual dinner Monday night as part of the conference, held at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel in Grand Rapids.
