SUTTONS BAY —
A motorist who topped 100 miles per hour through Suttons Bay was drunk and on the run as a parole absconder, authorities said.
Suttons Bay Police Chief Del Moore clocked Marcell William Schocko, 20, at 105 mph in the village on Dec. 7. Schocko wrecked his Chevrolet Camaro moments later in a wooded area along M-22.
"I had him on radar at 105 mph in a 30 mph zone at the north edge of town," Moore said. "Before I could get turned around and catch up to him, he'd crashed into some trees. The vehicle he was in was a really nice 2011 Camaro, but it isn't any more."
Schocko was pulled from the wreckage, then assaulted an emergency medical technician, Moore said. The 11 a.m. incident prompted charges of assault, operating while intoxicated second-offense and a habitual offender warrant against Schocko.
This isn't Schocko's first brush with the law. A Record-Eagle news account from May 2010 indicates Schocko was one of three men charged with severely beating a teen outside a party on State Street in Traverse City. The victim suffered multiple fractures and broken bones.
Schocko pleaded guilty to aggravated assault.
Schocko also was charged in 2010 with second-degree home invasion after he and another man broke into an apartment off Veterans Drive and stole an $1,800 television and about 40 DVDs.
Schocko pleaded guilty to third-degree home invasion and was sentenced to one to five years in prison.
Michigan Department of Corrections records show Schocko is listed as an "absconder from parole" as of Nov. 30.
Moore said Schocko is fortunate to be alive, given the magnitude of the crash.
"It's also very lucky someone else on the roadway wasn't injured," he said.
