Man drowns in Lake Michigan

BEULAH -- A downstate man drowned in Lake Michigan near the mouth of the Platte River.

Benzie County Sheriff's officials said the victim, a 21-year-old from Westland, was pronounced dead around 5 p.m. Saturday at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital in Frankfort. Authorities received a cell phone call just after 3:30 p.m. that reported a man drowning in Lake Michigan off the mouth of the Platte River in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The victim was brought to shore by other swimmers who located him in seven to 10 feet of water, officials said.

A Benzie County sheriff's deputy and federal park rangers responded, and emergency CPR was administered to try and resuscitate the victim. His name was not immediately released.
