TRAVERSE CITY — John Scrudato, a retired Traverse City teachers union president, will appear on some local ballots as a candidate for the state House in November.
Scrudato's 389 write-in votes in the Aug. 3 primary earned him the Democratic nomination for the state House 104th District, which represents Grand Traverse and Kalkaska counties.
He will face off against incumbent Rep. Wayne Schmidt, R-Traverse City, and independent candidate Megan Crandall, a Traverse City school board member.
Scrudato needed 167 votes to qualify, or 5 percent of the vote total in the two counties for the Democratic governor's race.
He retired this year as a special education teacher and president of the Traverse City Education Association.
