TRAVERSE CITY – There will be no merger between Munson Healthcare and Spectrum Health as Munson explores other “affiliation” options with health care systems around the state.

Munson Healthcare CEO Ed Ness confirmed Thursday morning that Munson won’t pursue a merger with Grand Rapids-based Spectrum, closing the book on merger discussions that began in January that raised widespread community concern about a potential loss of local control over health care operations.

“It became more and more apparent that there were other options we need to look at more closely,” Munson Healthcare board chairman Tom McIntyre said.

Munson officials said they will continue to explore other affiliations with health care systems including Spectrum, Trinity Health based in Novi, Northern Michigan Regional Health System in Petoskey and University of Michigan Health System.
