TRAVERSE CITY — A warm front is expected to sweep away the chill that's settled upon northern Michigan since Thanksgiving.
Residents should expect high temperatures in the low- to mid-40s on Saturday, then into the 50s across the region Sunday and Monday.
Those temperatures would be well above Traverse City’s average high temperatures of 36 to 37 degrees for the first week of December, National Weather Service Meteorologist Mike Boguth said.
But don’t expect to hear talk of all-time-high temperatures. In other years, Traverse City has topped the low- to mid-60s for the same time frame, figures not likely to be seen this weekend.
“The records don’t look reachable as of now,” Boguth said.
Boguth expects rain to accompany the warm front, with showers beginning Saturday night and into Sunday.
Warm weather and rain will melt the couple inches of snow that accumulated over the past week, but colder weather is likely to return by the middle of next week.
Some regional ski resorts, including Boyne Highlands, Boyne Falls and Nub’s Nob, either opened or are scheduled to open this week.
Nub’s Nob President and General Manager Jim Bartlett said his resort still planned to open this weekend.
Snow should remain on the slopes as long as there’s no daytime rain, he said. Warm spells are common in December, and early winter weather this year is more promising than in recent years.
“The last two years we weren’t even close to this,” Bartlett said. “I’m nothing but ecstatic.”
