Jailed deputy to be released

TRAVERSE CITY — A Grand Traverse sheriff’s deputy charged with choking a Michigan State Police trooper while intoxicated will be released from jail today.

Eighty-Sixth District Judge Michael Haley this morning reduced suspended Deputy Kipp Needham’s bond from $250,000 cash to a personal recognizance bond, which requires no money.

Haley said a mental health evaluation determined Needham shouldn’t pose a public risk.

Judge Thomas J. Phillips arraigned Needham last week on a count of assaulting, resisting or obstructing a police officer causing injury, possessing a firearm while intoxicated and two counts of domestic violence. He allegedly assaulted two female relatives and then scuffled with police who responded to the scene.

Needham is suspended without pay pending the outcome of criminal proceedings.
