Local man's death appears natural

TRAVERSE CITY — Authorities didn’t immediately detect anything suspicious after a man was found dead in his Traverse City apartment.

The landlord of an apartment building on the 200 block of East Eighth Street called police after he found the man, 66, dead in his apartment Monday evening.

Another tenant called the landlord to complain about water in their apartment. The landlord determined it was coming from the deceased man’s apartment and entered when he received no response to a knock on the door.

The man was dead in his apartment with the bathtub running. It’s not clear how long he had been dead.

A preliminary autopsy indicated the man likely died of some sort of heart problem, Traverse City Police Capt. Brian Heffner said. Officers who examined the scene didn’t note anything that raised their suspicions.

“They did not see any signs of foul play,” Heffner said.

The man was on several prescription medications, and a toxicology report will be completed to determine if any form of drugs played a role in his death.
